Blog: Security of Data in the Future

The protection of student privacy is becoming a factor that school districts have to consider as technology education is becoming normalcy within the majority of K-12 classrooms throughout the United States. In fact, Alhazmi et. al (2022) discusses the relevance of security of data by stating, "Intellectual security has become one of the most important challenges facing the world in light of the rapid and great repercussions of globalization" (p. 1). As society has adopted technology into everyday functioning in both work and schools, it has become a requirement for districts to ensure that they are protecting the privacy of their students identities as they work and interact within online learning platforms. As a result, Alhazmi et. al (2022) recognizes that educators need informed on the importance of intellectual security. In order for educators to be made aware of intellectual security challenges, districts should consider providing professional development opportunities that provides guidance on how to ensure that student privacy is being protected and respected while utilizing online websites and applications for learning.

Due to the fact that intellectual security is becoming a new challenge that needs to be addressed by various stakeholders, school districts are considering how they can ensure student protection and privacy. As a result, Alhazmi et. al (2022) states, "the process of teacher preparation has gained increasing attention in light of the impact of the information and technological revolutions" (p. 1). Since the needs of society are shifting towards the need for technological instruction, many undergraduate programs are reconsidering how they achieve the goal of educating future teachers on the subject of intellectual security of knowledge of the economy. Security of data in schools is an important subject matter as technology coordinators strive to protect student and personnel data in the K-12 school setting. Therefore, Bacak (2023) says, "K-12 schools utilize a growing number of technologies to operate effectively, ranging from technologies for learning to technologies that manage student and personnel data" (p. 1). In my opinion, it is important to discuss security of personal data and privacy with students. Students need to be made aware of the dangers of sharing personal information online as they navigate social media use and online learning at school.
