Blog: Social Responsibility and A Biblical Worldview

This course has taught me about the importance of recognizing the fact that students need educated on social responsibility and all of the accompanying concepts that come with the role of being a responsible technology user in today's world. Educators duty to impart social responsibility on our students has never been so crucial as many of our students are utilizing technology outside of the classroom while also being held to a high expectation of technology utilization within the classroom as well. There are many lessons to be taught that are directly related to social responsibility such as protecting digital privacy, creating a positive digital footprint, and using digitization to communicate and learn effectively. Although educators have to maintain and balance many different responsibilities of teaching students academics and social-emotional skills, it has become essential for students to receive necessary guidance on how to be a socially responsible citizen in the 21st century digital world. If schools are putting computers into the hands of students, they need to be prepared to take the time necessary to teach students on how to properly manage these devices and the responsibility that comes with device use.

In order for educators to teach social responsibility to their students, they must create a classroom environment and culture that models respect and values strong teacher-student relationships as well as peer-to-peer relationships. In fact, Santo et. al (2021) says, "Students who said their teachers encouraged them to care about others and work together to settle disputes, and fostered a classroom environment with clear rules, also said they felt both less aggressive and less victimized by their classmates" (para. 3). As a result, teachers must make a conscious effort to ensure that they are creating a classroom environment that requires students to foster positive social interactions with their peers. In addition, Richards (2020) states, "the teaching of personal and social responsibility model guided guide the relationship-building process" (p. 1). This statement proves the importance of building relationships with students because it provides long-term benefits of having the ability to establish connections with students. The overall goal is for students to leave the classroom with the skills necessary to be a responsible citizen as the world continues to moves towards increased digital globalization. The teaching of social responsibility also aligns with my biblical worldview which supports the idea of the privilege and long term benefits of teaching others. My biblical worldview philosophy can be supported by the English Standard Version Bible Proverbs 9:9 (2018) which states, "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will still be wiser, teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning" (King James Bible). The teaching of social responsibility can benefit all students by improving the overall learning experience and their futures.
