Blog: Digital Rights
According to Pangrazio and Sefton-Green (2021) "digital rights are human and legal rights that allow individuals to access, use, create and publish digital content on devices such as computers and mobile phones, as well as in virtual spaces and communities" (p. 5). As students are expected to navigate through a digital age, it is essential that they are aware of digital rights in regards to the concepts of freedom of expression and the right to privacy in both online and digital environments they encounter through social media use and online learning platforms. As educators who provide instruction through technology in the classroom, it becomes a responsibility of ours to ensure that we are always protecting the privacy of our students while modeling to students on how to protect individual privacy while living in a digital age. In order to model digital rights and responsibilities it is key to use appropriate language and behavior when interacting with others, respect the opinions of others, and do not share other individuals work without permission.
In fact, the philosophy of the digital citizen is emphasized within the ISTE standards for students. According to ISTE standard 1.2 Digital Citizen (2022) a digital citizen will recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world" (para 2). As a result, schools should highly consider the fact that digital literacy needs to be included within the curriculum in order to educate students on the importance of managing student personal data while maintaining digital privacy and security. Lastly, as the majority of student populations use social media for entertainment and communication, it is important to make students aware of the fact that data-collection technology may be used to track their navigation online. Students must be aware of the concept of their digital footprint which will follow them throughout their life. Individuals need to have a positive digital footprint while many employers and colleges take this into consideration while making hiring and acceptance decisions. The importance of digital rights will only continue to become increasingly evident in our society that relies so heavily on the use of technology to educate, work, communicate and function. In conclusion, individuals must be conscious on the right they have to protect themselves through engagement of positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior while utilizing technology for both education and social interactions.
